Today I used Flipgrid for the first time with my class. I tried it as a bell ringer since what I’ve been using seems to be getting a little stale. I got mixed reviews from the students. For the most part, they enjoyed recording their responses, but a few seemed to be overly anxious about recording themselves. They liked that I gave them an alternative to just solving problems, and that they got to explain themselves on the video.
However, 8th graders being 8th graders, they didn’t want to see themselves on video. That’s a small thing which I believe can be mellowed out over time though. I love the idea of them having to teach me a concept, rather than just solving something. With my larger class, in my small room, it was difficult for everyone to hear themselves think, and when it became quiet, they became more self conscious. So, I think next time I use this tool I’ll let them work on it in small groups, maybe rotate them through a specific station that has to solve a problem on camera. But I will definitely be using this tool again!
