Building Online Games with Sketch Nation

In the A.C. Williams Elementary Gifted and Talented classes we are using the free web tool called Sketch Nation to create our own online games. Each student will be given the opportunity to design their game from the ground up. They will start with the basics such as backgrounds, characters, obstacles, etc.

When students have finished the basics they will then move on to the harder aspects. They will have to make their levels and determine how you win on each level as well as how the characters die. They will have to try each level out on their own to make sure it makes sense and ensure that it can be played by others.

When their game is complete and ready to be played by others, we will share them online and other students will have the chance to try them out and provide feedback. This activity will be a fun, engaging, and challenging for my GT students.

Follow me at @CariLovesMath on Twitter for details on my student creations and how they liked the app!

Squishy Circuits, Make Do, Little Bits...Oh MY!

Through a grant from the Commerce Schools Educational Enrichment Foundation (CSEEF), I was able to purchase a variety of tools for STEM activities. During our 8th period enrichment I've had the privilege of learning along with these girls as they explore everything these tools offer

The Make Do kits for cardboard tools are a fun set to use to create cardboard structures. We've found that the saw is quite loud, but the tools are relatively easy to use and work well.

The Squishy Circuits set teaches the girls about circuits and conductivity, they've made some pretty awesome dough sculptures that also light up!

The Little Bits kits are the most involved, but offer the most opportunity for fun! From coding to cars, these kits allow experimentation with circuits, code, and engineering.

We have learned quite a bit with these kits and I look forward to incorporating them into my classroom throughout the year. Our next adventure will be a BreakoutEdu kit, stay tuned!
